Splash Deck Fountain, Al Liwan, Bahrain

Rather than creating a single landmark fountain, the concept centred on a connected water experience across the entire development.

The challenge

Al Liwan was designed as a destination that brings together retail, commercial and residential environments within a single development. The challenge was to create a feature that would connect these different spaces, encourage visitors to move through the site and provide a memorable focal point for residents and guests alike.

The water feature needed to feel welcoming and interactive, while complementing the premium character of the development without overwhelming the surrounding architecture.

The design concept

Rather than creating a single landmark fountain, the concept centred on a connected water experience across the entire development.

A large splash deck fountain forms the heart of the scheme, supported by a series of smaller water features that guide visitors through the complex. Playful jet effects, cascades, water tunnels and dynamic lighting create moments of discovery throughout the public realm.

A unique floodable floor allows the central splash deck to transform completely, shifting from an interactive fountain plaza into a reflective water surface that changes the character of the space.

Delivering the project

The project was delivered during the global challenges of 2020, requiring close collaboration between international teams and local specialists.

Working alongside local partner M. H. Al Mahroos, the fountain system was successfully installed and commissioned while maintaining the quality standards required for a landmark destination project.

Through careful coordination between design, engineering and installation teams, the project was completed on schedule despite the operational challenges facing the construction industry at the time.

The results

A destination built around water

The completed water landscape creates a balance between relaxation, entertainment and placemaking. Visitors are drawn through the development by a series of engaging water experiences, while the central splash deck provides a natural meeting point for the wider community.

Dynamic choreographies, colourful illumination and interactive effects ensure the fountain remains engaging throughout the day and evening, creating an ever-changing focal point within the development.

Award-winning development

Within its first year of operation, Al Liwan received multiple international awards recognising excellence in mixed-use development and innovation.

The water landscape plays an important role in reinforcing the identity of the destination, helping transform the development from a collection of buildings into a place people actively experience and remember.

Technology that opens up creative possibilities

Two fountain systems were installed with a 360° range of motion, enabling an almost infinite variety of water patterns through rotating and swiveling movements. The Oase design offers over 480 individually controlled water effects and more than 1,000 underwater spotlights in a comprehensive range of colors. All installations were tailored to suit the water depth of the existing reservoir. Even with its vast range of effects, the renovated fountain is more energy efficient than the previous system thanks to the use of LED lighting and more economical inverters and pumps.
