9 easy steps to your own pond

Water can add a touch of magic to any garden. The reflective surface gives visual accents, the rippling of the water calms and at the same time it can have an invigorating effect. Many people overestimate the effort and expertise required to fulfil the dream of a garden pond. Preformed ponds simplify the construction of a pond and are also ideal for those with less experience.

Requirements for a garden pond

A garden pond can be built in different sizes and can therefore be easily adapted to the size and conditions in your garden. The OASE preformed ponds are available in many different sizes and can be chosen according to the available space. The ideal pond location should be as clear as possible from overhanging trees in order to avoid excessive pollution. It is optimal for the pond to have sunshine for 4-6 hours a day to create ideal conditions if you want to keep fish.

Minimal tools and no previous experience required

An unbeatable advantage of the preformed ponds is how simple and convenient they are to install, even without experience.  All you need is a spade, a shovel, filling sand (simple play sand), a spirit level, a folding rule and a garden hose with a water connection. The foundation is an OASE preformed pond, which can be selected depending on the preferred shape and size.

A few steps to the garden pond:

Position the preformed pond in the desired location and mark the outline with sand.

Then mark the different depth zones of the pond with sand.

Now you can dig out the individual zones of the garden pond

Use the preformed pond to check you’ve dug enough out and touch up again if necessary.

Level out the unevenness in the excavated steps with filling sand to create flat surfaces.

Now check the surfaces with a spirit level. If these are level, the preformed pond can be inserted and 1/3 filled with water so that the bowl settles.

Now pour the filling sand under the edge of the preformed pond and fill this cavity with water. The water will slurry the sand to the edge of the pond shell. Repeat the process until the spaces under and next to the bowl are filled.

Then level the surrounding soil with topsoil, which provides the basis for subsequent planting. Please make sure that no topsoil gets into the water. This is very nutritious and would encourage algae growth in the pond.

Plants in and around the pond not only look beautiful, they also contribute to maintaining the biological balance. The surrounding bank zone can be filled with gravel after planting to cover the transition to the preformed pond. This area can also be designed with larger stones – depending on your taste.

The pond can then be filled with water.

Pond care – indispensable, but convenient

The smaller the body of water, the more pollution can affect the water quality – the use of a filter and corresponding pump is therefore highly recommended. Even smaller options such as the OASE Filtral UVC keep the water in the preformed pond clean and clear.

The Filtral UVC is an underwater filter with UVC clarifier and has the option to also be a water feature: it keeps the pond clean and clear under the water’s surface and can enchant above the water surface with an optional fountain attachment. What’s special: The Filtral UVC can be installed very easily without any prior knowledge.

Add additional accents

A garden pond should be a highlight in any garden and can be emphasised by the selected use of decoration and lighting – for example with spitters and pond figuresor other water features.

Even in the evening, your pond can be a real highlight thanks to a coordinated lighting concept. The OASE lighting range has been specially developed for use in and around the water. You can find our lighting guide here.
